Kay did her first carving of a small shoe in 1981; she traded that carving for two Warren knives. Kay carved her first bird, a Chickadee, in a class by John Crocker in April, 1987. She has been carving song birds, water fowl and wild fowl ever since. She uses power-carving tools and does her own painting and wood burning.
Kay won her first award in 1987 for "Best of Novice" Division for Song Birds at the Northwest Carvers Association Show in Puyallup, Washington. In 1988 she won "Best of the Northwest" category with an American Goldfinch at the First Annual Columbia Flyway Wildfowl Show in Vancouver, Washington. To date, she has won ribbons in every show she has entered. Her carvings are in private collections throughout the United States,Canada and Japan.
